Dog food recipe with simple easy steps you can do
March 28, 2021
I have mentioned how I cook my dog food, here’s why I do it.
The food we eat is rated by grade, but there is something called “feed grade”, way below grade A meat we buy. As you can imagine it is not as strict as “human grade” food.
You can find plenty of research stating concern on the quality of that meat and other things used in dog food. I am not getting into that in this post.
But here is something I did experience.
I was working at a hotel and noticed a giant 50 gallon steel drum, contained with animal fat from the kitchen. The employees told me it gets picked up and is used for animal feed, including cattle. This was not a dingy hotel, it was a quite luxury hotel in the Los Angeles area.
I know it all revolves around profit and what’s considered waste by some is often used as food for animals. Like to the leather from cattle and bull genitals. It’s turned into “Rawhide” and “Bully” treats respectively. Pretty gross.
Anyways, you might find places around you that sell healthy dog food. Its not cheap and does not have the shelf life of the dry kibble you can get at the department store.
Some people even feed their dogs raw chicken. Living nowhere near farms I cannot trust the quality or cleanliness of uncooked meat. Having chickens might be the only way to know for sure. I understand that bones only become brittle and harmful once cooked. Due to where I live and what’s available, my best option is cooked using ground chicken meat. (although I have tried turkey and beef at times but my dog seems to prefer chicken).
Here is my happy medium. You can buy better dry food and mix into this recipe, and still save on dog food.
-
Cook ground chicken. High heat will ensure you get rid of any bacteria that might be in the meat. (I sometimes add a bit of mineral salt although the benefits and use are debated.) Add water to the raw ground chicken. I make 7lbs, helps the cooking process and adds moisture if you will mix it with dry food.
-
Add quinoa or rice. Some recommend no grain. But I went from brown rice and now I only add about 1/2 a cup of quinoa and wait for it to expand. You can add kidney beans or black beans.
-
Add veggies. Frozen veggies are convenient. I use the “California blend” it contains carrots, broccoli and, cauliflower. I no longer add peas since my dog tends to not like them.
Try tweaking this recipe to your dogs liking. I knew a guy that used a slow cooker with good results.
Supplements are available for dogs that you can mix into the food if you are doing only cooked food. I add fish and krill oil to help my dogs coat and skin but do some research for what your breed can benefit from. Cooking this food I noticed little to no flatulence from my dog. Plus less shedding and rarely having any health issues. My dog weighs 50 pounds and this recipe lasts 1-2 weeks of feeding.
Good luck, I hope you find your way to having your dog live a happy, healthy, long life.
